Tech Tribalism Is Stupid

It’s certainly not a stretch to say that I love technology. Perhaps I like it more than I even should.

I’ve spent countless hours tinkering with different Linux distributions, self-hosting things that I could’ve simply paid someone a few dollars a month to host, trying different development tools, learning new programming languages, and just generally trying to make computers do things that I find interesting.

This post is not an argument against a passion for technology, it’s an argument against tech tribalism.

It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of Linux (and open source software in general). One doesn’t have to look at this blog for very long to figure that out. With that said, I’m also an avid photographer. I’ve previously talked about how much I’ve wanted to move my photography workflow to Linux and even tried forcing myself to figure out how to make it work for about 6 months. After that time, however, I came to the conclusion that the open source photography software just is not up to the task of a professional photography workflow (and don’t even get me started on the state of video editing applications on Linux). For me, Linux just is not currently a viable option for these sorts of workflows (though I do truly hope that changes in the future).

I've Been Trying Cosmic Desktop For a Month

It has been nearly a month now since System 76 released a beta build of Pop OS! 24.04 with their new Cosmic Desktop. Up until this point, I had largely avoided playing with the Cosmic Desktop as I’m generally not interested in putting alpha-quality software on my main devices. This seemed like a great time to slap the new Pop OS! onto my System 76 Pangolin laptop and give it a spin, however.
